Urlatori Alla Sbarra
(1960)
The
title loosely translates to "Rock 'n Rollers on Trial". A low-budget Italian
teen-flick that also featured Elke Sommer. I don't understand Italian, so I
can't really explain the plot. But it features lots of young, good-looking young
folks who play rock and roll all day, dance, make out, harass old people, and
ride scooters. Sounds like a lot of fun, but I don't really understand what this
has to do with jazz or Chet
Baker. We can assume that he did this gig to make a few quick bucks.
In the film, Chet is never called by name, he's just the "Americano". He's
the source of a running gag through the film, where while everyone else is
partying, he's just trying to get some sleep. He sleeps in a tub, under a couch,
in an elevator, in girl's lap, under a tree, and so forth.
About
halfway through the movie, we finally get to hear Chet play. He sits under a
tree and serenades a young girl. The song is Arrivederci, a pretty little
tune arranged by Piero Umiliani. The sound is similar to the tunes he recorded
in 1962 with Ennio Morricone. After that, "Americano" virtually disappears from
the film.
