Torino
1959, Stuttgart 1988
This DVD release from Impro-Jazz features two concerts, one from
Chet's early years, and one from his last years. We start with a kinescope of a
1959 gig in Torino featuring Lars Gullin on sax. Chet looks high, and the
sunglasses are an obvious clue to his condition. However, he sounds good, and
the band swings with three long tunes.

Next we get to see perhaps his
last professionally videotaped concert, recorded about 6 weeks before his death.
Chet's hair is long, and he's wearing an awful-looking white linen suit.
However, his playing is quite good. He even gets up and noodles on the piano during
"Portrait in Black and White". At the start of "Almost Blue", Chet shout
at one of the sound men about the equipment. Not Chet's best filmed performance
from his later years (that would be the Tokyo concert from the year prior), but
one to seek out to get one last glimpse of Chet before his horn was silenced
forever.
