West Coast Live
Chet Baker & Stan Getz

In 1953 Gerry Mulligan was busted for drugs and had to leave his band to serve a jail sentence. Stan Getz was brought in to fill the Bari Sax player's large shoes. Getz and Baker have a few magic moments, but nothing like the interplay of Chet and Gerry. Strike up the Band finds the two swinging and trading some great back-and-forth solos. For most of the CD, Getz sounds great, Baker sounds great. They just don't have the chemistry of Mulligan and Baker's original quartet. All of the tracks are from a 1953 gig at the Haig, except for the last 3 tracks on Disc 2. These were laid down at the Tiffany Club, with no live audience.
